Caring for waxed canvas

The one rule that matters: never machine wash it and never use detergent or hot water. All three strip the wax, and stripped wax is a canvas bag that no longer sheds rain. To clean it, brush off dry dirt first, then sponge the mark with cold water and let it air dry away from radiators and direct sunlight. Most scuffs rub out under your thumb, because the wax moves rather than scratches. When water stops beading, re-wax: warm the fabric, work a wax bar over it in thin layers, and leave it overnight to cure.
